ZLATKO PAKOVIĆ ( RS): IBSEN’S AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE AS BRECHT´S TEACHING PLAY

23. 9. ● 22:30h ● 95 min ● &TD big hall

With the help of Ibsen’s theatre play about the destiny of Doctor Stockmann and his family, in the form of Brechtian dialectic theatre, the director, the actors and the musician on stage create a completely original theatrical organism of the aesthetics and the ethics of resistance. The destiny of Ibsen’s heroes is the destiny of losers, the mute majority of the population in a society of transition from real socialism to real capitalism. This play brings the common people on stage. The combination of Ibsenian and Brechtian dramaturgy shows that the psychological characteristics of a personality and/or a character are not important in society and/or theatre. What is important is the logic of power and profit.

INTERVIEW

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR IBSEN’S AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE AS BRECHT´S TEACHING PLAY  TO A RANDOM PASSER-BY?

Invitation to a night out with the right people! With those who dared. Who dared to say NO to the elite they are disgusted with and to say YES to those who are oppressed, but have enough courage to be in the opposition! Consequently, this means hanging out with Dr. Stockmann, Henrik Ibsen, Bertold Brecht and Walter Benjamin. Time spent with true friends. It gives courage. Alternative time of humanity faced with inhuman humanity. Because, the one who agrees to humiliation is an accomplice to injustice and death. And the one who dares is truly alive.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FORM TO TALK ABOUT REALITY?

Because theatre has been the alternative space and time to real life for the last 2500 years. It is an experimental space or a laboratory for devising new forms of social life and communication. It is the only art or skill with the means of changing the way of life here and now, playing with old/archaic forms of life, making fun of engrained beliefs and hopes, restoring the things that are considered important to its true measure. Theatre is political par excellence and it is humanity’s most democratic institution, where all values can truly be reassessed.

WHY SHOULD WE, AS AUDIENCE, CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE DOING?

Because it opens you up and invites you to participate in your own freedom.

Because it shows that the essence of life is in the audacity of the game, not in the drudgery of mere imitation.

Because it makes conscious the fact that a person can even be the subject of his/her own death.

Because, lastly, You are here not to watch the plot on the stage, but as the subject of a conspiracy against an elite minority that wants to possess the essence and time, the essence and nothingness??

IF YOU HAD ANY MEANS AVAILABLE (‘IDEAL WORLD SITUATION’) WHAT KIND OF PROJECT WOULD YOU DO?

I think that every project of real theatre, which has to be a combination of an authentic theatrical game and revolutionary politics, can be realized always and everywhere, regardless of the available means at hand. Because the truth lies in the fact that theatre works with means that are at its immediate disposal. At the moment, I am preoccupied with the idea of including immigrants passing through my country in my next performance, whose structure will consequently be determined by the very destiny of these people, the muddy conscience of our Europe. So, I am always thinking about the structure of subject matter as the destiny of people, I am not thinking about mere instruments of institutional or institutionalized theatre.

WHAT THREE THINGS NEVER FAIL TO BRING YOU PLEASURE?

Children’s game

Art with flashes of Dadaism

Meeting with reliable friends
